Why - Purpose

 

In today’s volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) world many of our leaders are now finding they are ‘in over their heads’.  Their psychological growth is becoming misaligned with the challenges they face.  The majority of these leaders are at Stage 4 in their development, which is called ‘conventional’ as it was viewed as the highest stage of development required for leaders in organisations.  As conventional leaders face increasing levels of VUCA they increasingly become overwhelmed, anxious and exhausted.  As result their decision making capacity becomes constrained. 

The decisions made by leaders in our organisations collectively create the society in which we live. As organisations struggle to survive during VUCA, with predominately Stage 4 leadership, they are collectively creating an unsustainable society. It is widely accepted, that our society is destroying our future and that of generations to come.  Our ‘old leadership’ is now unsustainable. To lead us to a better, and more sustainable, future in the VUCA world our society needs more leaders who have developed to the ‘post-conventional’ stages of psychological growth.  These post conventional leaders can employ ‘new leadership’ and, together, create a better future for us all.

We believe ‘new leadership’ is important for:

 

  • Our Leaders, as it enables greater ability to deal with complexity, connect with people and behave with agility.  This psychological growth enables leaders to increase their well-being by focusing on their purpose whilst working with others to co-create a better future.  This need has been recognised by the World Economic Forum who in January 2017 called for responsive and responsible leadership.
  • Our Organisations, as it enables greater ability to deal with VUCA and thrive in the long-term by collectively creating a more sustainable society within which to operate. Examples of organisations that are using the power of business to solve social and environmental problems include over two thousand registered B Corps.
  • Our Society, because as we continue on the road to affluence, our environmental, economic and psychological well-being is in decline. We need to develop the right kind of leaders who will steer us away from this dangerous scenario. The United Nations has recognised the need for a more sustainable society and has set 17 Sustainable Development Goals to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all.
